(RUSHVILLE, Mo.) A beloved United States Postal Service worker in Rushville is spending the beginning of the new year navigating a new normal after her family’s house caught fire Monday evening.

72-year-old Bobbie Smith was away from her home when the fire took her house and everything in it.

The house, which has belonged to her family for generations, not only contained years worth of cherished memories, but her husband was also inside of the home at the time of the fire.

First responders found Smith’s husband outside of the home with severe burns. He was transported to Mosaic where he reportedly passed away Tuesday morning.

Smith said that it’s not just losing her possessions that has her distraught, it is losing her other half that has been the hardest part.

Rushville local Amy Holt recalled the moment she saw the smoke coming from Smith’s house.

“The house has completely burned to the ground. There’s nothing left,” Holt described. “Her husband, he went to the hospital after the fire, but passed away after that.”

Many Rushville community members reiterated what an amazing woman Smith is, saying that she is one of the most selfless and considerate people they’ve met, and what a tragedy it is for something like this to happen to her.
