“It is beyond toxic. The morale is so low”: Texas rural letter carrier speaks out on terrible working conditions, massive pay cuts

A massive assault on the United States Postal Service is currently underway. Under a new restructuring program, post office management is taking aim at tens of thousands of jobs, and slashing wages for tens of thousands of rural carriers, reducing them to poverty. With a new “evaluation period” beginning last week for tens of thousands of rural letter carriers, which is used to determine their pay for the next six months, even deeper cuts to their pay are on the horizon.

When the next pandemic hits, and it is scheduled to come, good luck getting your mail and packages because we are fed up with the bull**it and are done with it.

I’ve worked as a rural carrier for over 26 and never felt so under appreciated then I do know . I’d never recommend this place as a career just wish I could retire . I hate going to work and hate hearing that mail volume is down so what . What about all these back breaking packages nowadays . The standards are garbage and no one has any idea if this new system is accurate the union dropped the ball on this new system big time it’s ridiculous

rrecs losses have disheartened me to the point that I simply don’t try anymore. DPS rejects? w*f are those. Forward mail? Never heard of it. Hold mail? say what. I delivered packages to wrong house. Fk it. If low quality is what your looking for by reducing my salary then low quality is exactly what the usps is getting. Delivery is alot easier when you don’t try anymore. Moral is so low in my office that it’s ridiculous.

I worked for the postal service for 40 years but when Rrecs was first implemented I lost 6 thousand dollars and was required to work 6 days a week. So I said the h**l with it and retired , I wanted to work a couple more years but enough was enough. I gave 2 thirds of my life to these people and this is the thanks I get. I feel sorry for those who have too many years in to walk away, as for the younger ones get out don’t waste your life with these people. It’s only going to… Read more »

Neither the USPS nor its fraternal twin, the union, give a c**p about how bad it is. The situation was horrible when I retired, six years ago. But they still get their pay and their cushy office jobs. Talk about getting the Teamsters is misguided. If you talk to UPS loaders, their situation is also bad–low pay and constant demands by management for more work. If conditions are to change, it will require a rank-and-file rebellion and the building of a new organization, rank-and-file committees democratically controlled by ordinary workers.

I ve been a rural carrier for 35 years, I can not say how disheartened and disappointed I am in what they doing to rural carriers, I am sorry for the old timers who I know are slowly falling apart but have to work harder to make less money. The newer carriers, I can only hope it will get better for you but in all honesty I don’t see that happening, to me it’s as if they’re slowly phasing out rural carriers.
Shame on union for allowing all of this to happen to hard working folks, it’s a travesty

You guys are so pathetic. Rural carriers making more than 90,000 a year talking about how bad they are treated. You and your union have been bleeding the postal service dry for years and now that you are being paid for the little work you actually do it’s a travesty! City carriers do twice the work and are micromanaged time to come into the fold.

The gist of the article is correct but there are a lot of inaccuracies in regards to the details like how we got rrecs and how our pay is structured… But still, doesn’t change how royally screwed we get on a daily basis.

Joe,
After 16 years as a rural carrier I don’t get 90k. Come join us rurals if you think we got it SOOOO easy. Hahahaha I had a “city” carrier transfer onto my route. He lasted a week and a half before quitting. Had himself a spectacular tantrum too before storming out the door. I still laugh when I think of it

You need to shut the f… up. You city carriers bleed the post office dry wasting time on the clock . After 8 hours you get time and half for the 9& 10 hour, and then double time for the rest of the NIGHT You out there finding around wasting time. JOE is D… FOOL.

Joe is an idiot who clearly thinks rural carriers are paid the same way as he is and raking in overtime. FYI Joe due to the weakness of their union rural carriers do not get paid the way you do. Their craft has an exception to the Fair Labor Standards Act. ( they only get paid for 8 even if they work 11 hours 59 minutes in a day)

I’m beyond p**sed this place is absolute toxic trash. A corporate meat grinder. JUST GOT MY FULL TIME 2 months ago….GOT LIED TO ABOUT THE SALARY. OFFERED HOURLY BUT not ALLOWED TO TAKE IT. Any time you talk about money Boss turns into an evil person . UNion is compromised they are working for USPS 100% . Its time to let the post office be judged in the court of public opinion because there are no Carrier Unions trying to help carriers. Sure they take the money but I think they get paid by USPS to do nothing and offer… Read more »

When I walk by city routes like Joe’s, they are so small, I can fit 4 of them in my route. I cannot believe they call them a route, and then Joe comes here to challenge us.

@Lou Gotts @Sgt Pepper If I represented the rural craft I would be MORTIFIED at the blatant ignorance displayed here on this thread! You should be ashamed….. I would easily determine the exact IP address of the embarra*sing disgruntled federal employees paid (very well!) to perform a service to the American public that they have declared they refuse to do. SHAME ON YOU! I would fire you on the intentional grounds alone….. You have violated the most basic of rules as a federal employee ELM 665.13 Failure to discharge duties conscientiously and effectively. Your INTENTIONAL actions compromise the integrity of The Service and each employee… Read more »
