Rural Carrier saves disabled customer from fire

Rural Carrier Associate Troy Boswell was recently delivering mail in Ronceverte, WV, when he spotted a fire in a customer’s backyard.

Boswell immediately called 911, honked his horn and rushed to knock on the front door of the residence.

The customer — a recovering stroke victim who relies on a wheelchair — answered the door, unaware of the blaze, which had already engulfed outbuildings as it approached her home.

Boswell moved the woman a safe distance away from the house and stayed with her until firefighters arrived and saved it from destruction.

“She could not have made it out alone,” said local Postmaster Deanna Walton. “Troy went above and beyond his postal duties in this time of need.”
