Rural mail carrier injured after SUV flips

BERNARD, Iowa — A rural mail carrier was injured after her SUV entered a ditch and flipped Tuesday, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department.

Tonya Waller, 43, of Bernard, was taken by ambulance to UnityPoint Health-Finley Hospital in Dubuque with minor injuries, according to Deputy Russ Long.

The deputy said Waller was delivering mail at about 12:40 p.m. Tuesday while driving westbound on 21st Street in Bernard, a gravel road. Waller lost control of the vehicle on a downhill grade during sleet and freezing rain.

Long said she left the roadway, went into the ditch and jumped a driveway, which caused the vehicle to flip. The SUV landed on the road on its passenger side. It suffered about $6,000 worth of damage.
