Roth in-plan conversions coming to the TSP in January 2026

Ruralinfo

Starting in January 2026, you’ll be able to convert money in your traditional (pre-tax) balance to your Roth (after-tax) balance in your TSP account. This is called a “Roth in-plan conversion”. If you don’t have a Roth balance in your TSP account, your first Roth in-plan conversion will create one.

If you’re considering doing a Roth in-plan conversion, we strongly recommend that you consult a tax advisor to start planning how it would affect your taxable income and estimate how much you may need to pay in taxes.

When you convert pre-tax money from your traditional TSP balance, your Roth in-plan conversion amount will become part of your taxable income for the year. This means that you’ll pay income tax on the conversion amount based on your income tax rate. You must pay the income tax on the conversion amount using personal funds from another source, such as a savings account. You cannot use part of the conversion amount in your TSP account to pay taxes.

We’re working hard to add Roth in-plan conversions to the TSP and will share more information in the coming months. We’re also developing a calculator that will help you estimate the effects of converting traditional money to Roth money in your TSP account.

In the meantime, you can review general information about traditional and Roth on our website and in these TSP booklets:

Which Post Offices have lost the evening collection? An Update on RTO Implementation

Ruralinfo

Over the past two years, the Postal Service has been quietly eliminating the evening collection of mail at thousands post offices, one by one. Rather than going out the same day to a processing center, mail, packages, and Priority items sit overnight in the back of the post office, waiting to be collected the next morning, when the day’s mail is dropped off. It’s part of an initiative called Regional Transportation Optimization (RTO).

Blaine postal carrier honored “National Hero of the Year” following dog attack

Blaine postal carrier Dave Hamilton, 55, received national recognition for saving a woman from a dog attack earlier this year.

Hamilton’s union, the National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association, awarded him the “National Hero of the Year” honor in front of 1,500 people during the union’s convention on August 20 in Orlando, Florida. Hamilton was the only one named national hero after being selected among three other finalists who were regionally recognized for going above and beyond in their communities.

“I was exhilarated,” Hamilton said. “To be called a hero at all is really something, but being called ‘National Hero of the Year’ is incredible.”

Hamilton’s August 20 honor lined up exactly with his 20th year at the U.S. Postal Service, all of which he’s spent in Blaine.

Standing on stage, Hamilton said he was shocked to hear he had won the national award. Everyone else on stage had done notable acts of service, so Hamilton had no expectation of receiving the highest honor.

September is National Suicide Prevention Month

September is National Suicide Prevention Month, and the USPS Employee Assistance Program is using this time to remind employees and their loved ones about the support it offers.

The program, also known as EAP, uses the month to increase awareness of the warning signs and risk factors associated with suicide, promoting early intervention and reducing the stigma around mental health challenges.

The campaign seeks to create an environment where those who are struggling feel less alone and more apt to seek help. Open conversations are encouraged, and guidance will be shared on recognizing when someone may be in crisis and how to offer meaningful support.

Campaign materials are available for download throughout September on the monthly focus page and year-round on the suicide prevention page of the EAP website.

Additional information and support is available by phone at 800-327-4968 (800-EAP-4YOU) or by TTY at 877-492-7341.

A Newcastle mail carrier was recently honored for his part in saving a man from the Sheepscot River in March while on his route on Wednesday, Aug. 20.

Alex Tomasello received the Hero Award from the National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association, a labor union within the U.S. Postal Service representing more than 133,000 members in rural and suburban areas, during a ceremony in Orlando, Fla. on Wednesday, Aug. 20.

Tomasello, of Damariscotta, was following his route on Head Tide Road in Alna when he noticed a few people seemingly in distress along the river, he said.

“I pulled over and got out and ran over there,” he said. “There was somebody in the river who was getting washed downstream.”

After seeing what was happening, Tomasello said he ran down to the water and waded into the cold waters with a branch.

“The guy was able to grab a hold of (the branch) as he went by,” Tomasello said. “One of the people standing by the river had come down by that time and helped me carry him up the river bank.”

A bystander on scene called an ambulance. Once the situation seemed handled, Tomasello said he got back to his mail truck and finished his delivery route for the day.

About a month ago, a representative from the letter carriers’ association called to say Tomasello was receiving the Hero Award for the Atlantic region, making him one of four honorees this year.

Indiana RCA loses life in crash

Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Audriana Crosby, the 19-year-old rural postal carrier from Loogootee who tragically lost her life in a car accident on Highway 231 on this past Thursday.
The family released a statement saying “We are heartbroken over the sudden passing of our beloved Audriana. She was a bright light in all of our lives-full of love, laughter, and dreams for her future.”
To help the family with funeral expenses and a tombstone, they’ve set up an online fundraiser. If you’re able to contribute, any amount helps and would mean so much to them.
They are close to their goal, let’s help them get the remaining amount.
