Body found on Eau Claire’s northside now identified as missing rural carrier

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (RELEASE) — On Thursday, December 6, 2018 at approximately 4:15 p.m. investigators with the Buffalo and Eau Claire County Sheriff’s Offices went to a residence on the 2600 block of Seymour Road related to the Toby A. Cleasby missing person investigation. This residence is in the City of Eau Claire. During the course of this investigatory work, the body of an adult male was found inside the residence. The Eau Claire Police Department was contacted and is the lead agency in this death investigation.

On Friday, December 7, 2018 the body was transported to the University of Wisconsin Hospitals in Madison, WI for a forensic autopsy. The body was identified as Toby A. Cleasby (DOB: 03/27/1965). The autopsy determined Cleasby did not suffer any traumatic injuries. A full toxicology examination is

required to confirm the cause of death and is underway.

Cleasby was reported as a missing person to the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office on November 5, 2018. During the course of that investigation, Cleasby’s vehicle was located near the intersection of Hotchkiss Avenue and North Shore Drive, in Eau Claire County. The Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office investigation into Cleasby’s disappearance included numerous witness interviews and the examination of video surveillance footage, telephone records and financial records. This comprehensive investigative work resulted in the finding of Cleasby. The investigation remains active and ongoing. This matter does not pose a threat to the safety of the community. Cleasby was missing for more than one month. It is believed some community members have information about the activities and whereabouts of Cleasby during this time.
