First NGDVs Delivered to the Postal Service

The first Next Generation Delivery Vehicles (NGDVs) were delivered to the United States Postal Service by Oshkosh Defense on May 31, 2024. These vehicles are the result of more than a decade of planning and testing, and have been deployed to the Athens, GA, S&DC (Sorting and Delivery Center) to replace the current fleet of Long Life Vehicles (LLVs).

The NGDV’s design was determined in part by the feedback of a group of rural letter carriers from across the country who reviewed, tested, and drove the vehicle during multiple site visits in Oshkosh, WI, in July 2021. Some of those carriers (shown above with USPS VP, Engineering Systems, Linda Malone) are Todd Hohn, CO; John Embleton, DE; Kimberly Driskell, GA; Mark Huebner, WI; Randy Johnson, MO; Terry Stubblefield, TX; Jenny Smith, NY; Audrey Solomon, NC; Lauren Duren, MT; Dan Matthews, NJ and Michelle Maston, CA.

You may have seen the NGDV displayed at our National Convention in 2022 and had the opportunity to inspect the vehicle and its enhanced safety features, increased cargo space, advanced technology, and increased efficiency and comfort for carriers. The production of NGDVs will include both fuel-efficient internal combustion engines and battery-electric varieties in FWD and AWD. We will keep our members updated as additional NGDVs are produced and deployed throughout the country.

  1. That 100 mile range on a 120 mile route is going to be awesome in the heat of summer and the dead of winter! Pack an extra meal, extra water, (and some toilet paper).

    • Hopefully that route gets the gas version. But postal math would put the 100 mile range on a 95 mile route, hoping you never have to detour.

      • My detours are regularly 10-20 miles. I’m screwed. Guess I will be taking many dumps in mail tubs.

  2. With Amazon delivering their own parcels on my route now, I could downsize my personal vehicle significantly. I see this as an issue 10 years ago, not now. I suspect this is a move to take away our EMA.
