Latest round of rural carrier route evaluations maintains attack on US postal workers’ pay

The United States Postal Service (USPS) completed its second round of route counts under its new Rural Route Evaluated Compensation System (RRECS) last week. The hated compensation system was first launched this spring to disastrous effects for rural letter carriers, resulting in massive pay cuts for around two-thirds of the rural workforce, in some cases by $10,000 or even $20,000 a year.

Rural letter carriers at USPS work under a de facto piece rate system. Instead of being paid by the number of hours worked, the post office periodically “evaluates” the workload for every route, which it then uses to calculate compensation for each worker. Even before the RRECS evaluation system, the periods in which these counts take place were infamous among carriers for sudden and unexplained drops in volumes, which could be conveniently used to underestimate the true value of a route.

Ruralinfo.net note: Yes I realize what website this is on.  I share this because they are the only ones keeping the conversation going with rural carrier about RRECS.

  1. The First paycheck that showed the RRECS cut on my paycheck I honorably gave my two weeks notice. Not so much over the huge pay loss monetarily (I would have gladly took a hit for the team if it were truly about budget cuts as the core issue), but more for the principle of allowing that billionaire to become a multi billionaire on the backs of the U.S. Mail carrier. I stand up for my brothers and sisters. Truly the hardest working people in America The US MAIL CARRIER and extremely under- appreciated.

  2. In all my years of work, I’ve never seen a company that works so hard against its employees! Our “awesome ” union takes being useless to a whole new meaning.

  3. The union on the Rural side is weak. They really don’t care about the carriers The city carrier’s union is much better from what I have heard.

  4. RURAL CARRIERS: FIGHT BACK!
Print out a copy of the Union Decertification Form at the bottom of this link, get your rural full-time & part-time colleagues to sign it, and send it in to the NC address ASAP!
    https://decertifynrlca.com/
Send a message to our worthless union!

    • We need to stand together and decertify the union. Read the contract the union has covered themselves by not allowing you to defend yourselves in ANY grievance. You have to go through them that’s the equivalent of not having any representation at all. How many have you heard from your union they can’t do this or that?

      • I tried and they sent my papers back to me saying the date was wrong so I sent another set during the dates that they gave me and after 10 days the tracking number basically just fell off..

        it says…

        “Moving through network:
Your package will arrive later than expected, but is still on its way. It is currently in transit to the next facility.”

That was 5 days ago on the last day of my 10 day window which I sent on the FiRST day. Everything is postmarked like they want so we will see if it gets denied again or even makes it to them at all????

This union is an absolute joke!!

  5. Hey folks, this is a good article from WS. They are trying to develop a network of rank n file committees. This will take the place of our inept union. I have started a committee in my office I suggest everyone start one in their offices. Fill out the info on the sources site to get started and someone will get in touch with you ASAP! Hang in there brothers and sisters. Remember there is strength in numbers and they can’t deliver anything without us.

      • Hi Snap, I am repeating my above message to Blue here. ” … if you are not aware, the USPS Postal Rank-and-File Committee is meeting pretty much weekly online. All crafts are welcome. Our last meeting had carriers, both rural and city, discuss the situation developing under DeJoy and how we can reach out to more postal workers with our message. You can contact me at hector_cordon@msn.com for more info.”

  6. In my office they do everything they can to cut your route. I have many homes that send out packages and on a weekly basis I pick up about 500-700 packages. After the first round came out they started handing out sacks to the customers so I only get credit for 1 package instead of the actual number. Why don’t they cut the supervisors pay who do nothing but sit on their phones and play solitaire.
