NRLCA ACTION ALERT: The Social Security Fairness Act is Scheduled for a Vote TODAY!

H.R. 82, the Social Security Fairness Act, is scheduled for a vote THIS evening, November 12. Contact your representative ASAP and ask them to vote “Yes” on H.R. 82.  After an attempt to derail H.R. 82 while Congress was in recess, an agreement has been reached that will allow H.R. 82 to come up for a vote under suspension of the rules on Tuesday, November 12.  Under suspension of the rules, H.R. 82 will need a two-thirds majority vote to pass.  We need every member we can get.  With 330 co-sponsors, H.R. 82 is one of the most co-sponsored bills in the House of Representatives, but that doesn’t guarantee its passage.  Every vote is crucial under suspension of the rules.  To get this important legislation passed that will repeal the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO), we need you to ask your representative to vote “Yes” on this legislation.
Both GPO and WEP unfairly reduce, or in some cases eliminates, Social Security benefits earned by rural letter carriers, as well as other federal and postal employees who are impacted by these two provisions.  Congress has the power to correct this injustice by passing the bipartisan H.R. 82/S. 597, the Social Security Fairness Act. Currently, WEP impacts about 2.1 million people, while GPO impacts approximately 745,000 social security beneficiaries.
