NRLCA Endorses United States Postal Service Shipping Equity Act

Representative Jackie Speier (D-CA-14) has proposed legislation that would amend title 18, United States Code and title 39, United States Code to allow the USPS to ship alcohol likes its competitors UPS and FedEx. Currently, the Postal Service cannot ship beer, wine, or liquor. The bill would allow USPS to ship alcoholic beverages directly from licensed producers and licensed retailers to consumers over the age of 21.

A past Congressional Budget Office study had estimated that the Postal Service would bring in $50 million in new revenue by shipping alcohol. Representative Speier proposed a similar bill in 2013, but it did not move past the committee stage.

The United States Postal Service Shipping Equity Act is currently cosponsored by Jim Costa (D-CA-16) and Doug LaMalfa (R-CA-01).
