Rural mail carrier killed in Litchfield, Maine crash

LITCHFIELD — A woman working as a rural mail carrier died of injuries suffered after her mail truck apparently rolled over in a crash Saturday morning, officials said.

Alicia Bubier, 48, of Wales had been southbound on Huntington Hill road before leaving the roadway, where the vehicle rolled several times according to an initial investigation. Bubier was partially ejected from the vehicle. The vehicle had rolled over onto its side and the woman was extricated by Gardiner Ambulance Service and taken to the hospital with significant injuries, according to Rick Sieberg, Gardiner fire chief. She later died at the hospital.

Steve Doherty, a regional spokesman for the United States Postal Service, confirmed Monday that a Litchfield rural carrier died from injuries suffered in a vehicle crash while she was working. He said grief counselors were available to her coworkers.

“Our deepest condolences go out to her family, friends and coworkers as they navigate this tragic loss,” Doherty said Monday, adding that Doherty and the Postal Service was investigating the incident.

The crash, reported just after 9 a.m. Saturday, took place near the intersection of Huntington Hill Road and Quackenbush Lane, according to Sieberg. Quackenbush Lane is a dirt road that leads to Sand Pond.

Details about the crash were not immediately available from the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office, which responded to the scene.

Sieberg said the mail truck was an older model used widely in delivering the mail and was the only vehicle involved in the crash.

Litchfield and Gardiner firefighters responded to assist at the crash site, and remove the woman from the vehicle.
