PALMETTO, Ga. — A United States Postal Service worker died at the Palmetto mail facility, USPS confirmed with 11Alive on Monday.

It’s unclear how the employee died, but USPS said that the person was a mail handler assistant at the Palmetto Processing & Distribution Center.

“The Postal Service is deeply saddened by the loss of our postal family member. Our sincere condolences and thoughts go out to his family, friends, and co-workers,” a USPS spokesperson said in a statement in part.

This is unacceptable. I worked USPS for almost 25 yrs. All the plants and offices are toxic to their employees. It was different when I started. We worked together to get mail out to be delivered it changed about 10 yrs in. Management was the biggest toxic item in the whole place. No regard for employees health and welfare. 12 hr days and back in 8 hrs later. The stress is unbearable. I retired 5 yrs early because I couldn’t take the micro management directed to the employees that actually worked compared to new workforce that didn’t work but would get away with 30 minute breaks and hour lunches. It was 10 mins and 30 minutes but because of their self entitled opinions of what they could get away with management never got on them at all but pushed the workers who worked to their breaking points.

I retired a little over 3 years ago because I was the only custodian in a level 22 office and they wouldn’t hire anyone. I was doing more than my job required because I loved my job. After 11 years as a city carrier, the custodian job felt like it was a lot harder. After I retired, they hired 2 people that can’t do the job I was doing by myself. I feel your pain, and I am glad that I got out.

To be honest, I see alot of post that there hiring and I even went to there job fairs and also fill out applications online and still nothing. It’s seems like they only get there own people and wasting other people time who really wants to work.

When I was an ET decades ago, we put up a guard rail to protect an electrical panel where 240 volt three phase current entered an optical reader because the clerks were using that area as a shortcut. The local safety officer agreed. Management told us to remove the guard rail because it impeded the flow of the mail and the Local OSHA could not be enforced in a federal facility. In other words, get hurt first and we will worry about safety later.

I stood up to abusive managers and was fired for my trouble. My life is ruined. I lost everything. Please if you can help me pay rent and utilities so I will not become homeless please see and share my GoFundMe page – search “Hoping to Preserve My Life” – retaliation at the postal service is alive and well. Hoping postal workers will unite to help save a former employee who stood up to the abuse. It cost me everything.
