Mail carrier says he was suspended after post about winter safety

HAMILTON COUNTY, Ohio (WXIX) – A local mail carrier said he is on emergency placement with no pay after expressing his safety concerns on Facebook.

After a winter storm brought heavy snow to the Tri-State, Jason Thompson, a local U.S. Postal Service mail carrier, said he arrived at the Fairfield facility Monday morning to find buried trucks and no packages to deliver.

“A lot of people aren’t aware of what we experience every day,” Thompson said. “That’s fine as carriers, we are kind of used to the expectation.”

After being snowed in, Thompson left his house in the morning to drive to Fairfield’s USPS facility. For more than two decades, he’s worked as a mail carrier.

Thompson made a post on Facebook expressing his frustrations with the system, and he was quickly contacted by the USPS.

“I have been told that it needs come down or there could be repercussions, or I’m okay to bring the awareness. I think it’s important,” he said.

Thompson said because of the post, he has been put on emergency placement without pay as the company investigates.

FOX19 NOW reached out to the USPS about the allegations in Thompson’s post. The USPS sent a statement saying the U.S. Postal Service delivers mail in cold weather to ensure delivery of critical items and that employee safety is a top priority.
